ENGLISH COMPETENCE FOR PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER
Objectives
English Competence for Personal Support Worker Course
aims to provide the students with the knowledge and
skills in the use of English as a Second Language.
They will also be trained to become qualified to work
as Personal Support Workers in Nursing Homes, Hospitals
and Community Care Centres, as they develop their English competence.
Methodology
Lecture and practical classroom applications and Clinical Practice in Nursing Homes and outside tours.
Program
- Basic Level –
This level involves a basic understanding of how the English language works. The students will be taught how to identify the parts of speech and how these parts of speech are put together to form sentences. They will be able to demonstrate their ability to draw simple diagrams that show the relationships of sentence parts.
The foregoing objectives are tied-up in relation to the knowledge which a Personal Support Worker should know on the following topics:
- Overview of the Canadian Health System as embodied in the Canada Health Act
- The Nursing Home, Hospital Administration and Circle of Home Care
- Intermediate Level –
This level focuses on the communicative means as a tool of learning given spoken communication as the goal. English as a language is governed not only by linguistic rules but also by socio-linguistic consideration which determines the effectiveness, appropriateness and perceived meaning of English. These will be covered in the discussion of the following topics in the Health Care Industry:
- Individuality of the Person
- The Role of the Worker
- Interpersonal Skills
- Household Management and Meal Preparation
- Safety
- Abuse
- Cognitive Impairment and Mental Health Issues
- Advanced Level –
This level provides the students with the necessary tools that will raise their level of confidence in the use of the English Language in Communication. They will be able to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired in the Basic and Intermediate Levels and acquire an in-depth vocabulary and communication skills through the Clinical classroom practice in the following topics:
- Assisting the Person with Mobility
- Personal Hygiene
- Assisting to Manage Ongoing Conditions
- Assisting with Medications
- Assisting the Family
